Dominic Cummings: What did he do and when during the coronavirus lockdown? – BBC Newsnight

UK PM Boris Johnson’s most senior adviser, Dominic Cummings, has said he acted reasonably and legally after driving across England during lockdown, while he had coronavirus symptoms. But what exactly did he do and when? Subscribe to our channel here:

Dominic Cummings drove 260 miles (418km) from London to Durham, and took a 60-mile round trip from Durham to a nearby town on his wife’s birthday – a trip he says he made to test whether his eyesight was good enough to drive.

Mr Cummings is facing calls to resign, both from opposition politicians and members of the governing Conservative Party, whose leader, Boris Johnson, he advises.

In a highly unusual move for an adviser, Mr Cummings gave a press conference, which was intended to clear up any details of his whereabouts, but many questions remain.

Mr Cummings has said he believed he acted “reasonably” and within the law. He has so far been backed by Mr Johnson and other senior government ministers.

But his actions have raised the question – did one of the government’s most senior employees ignore the rules he had helped set for millions of people across the nation?

Policy Editor Lewis Goodall takes a look at the holes in the account.

In the studio, Emily Maitis is joined by the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford and Conservative MPs Craig Whittaker and Andrew Bridgen.

Cummings: ‘I don’t regret what I did, reasonable people may disagree’

Dominic Cummings says he does not regret driving 264 miles from London to his parents’ estate in Durham despite suspecting that both he and his wife had coronavirus. Answering questions from reporters after reading from his prepared statement, Cummings said he felt his actions were reasonable in the circumstances. He added that the stay-at-home regulations in the UK had leeway in exceptional circumstances and that he had not considered resigning his post as adviser to Boris Johnson

Sky Turns Black When CCP’s Biggest Conference Begins; US Says NO to China Wanting Full Control of HK

The sky over Beijing turned pitch black during a large thunderstorm, as the Chinese Communist Party began its largest annual political conference. Many netizens posted photos and videos of the phenomena, noting it was unusual, and many took it as a “bad omen” for the Chinese leadership.

When the conference began, Xi Jinping and top officials around him entered the hall without facemasks. There has been ongoing debate on whether the event should be held in person, or as a teleconference, given the risks of infection from the new coronavirus.

Among the proposed policies the regime unveiled is a national security law in Hong Kong that would extend the mainland’s laws into Hong Kong—a move that would go against the “one country, two systems” agreement. U.S. Senators are working to introduce a bipartisan bill, however, that would sanction Chinese officials if they go through with it.

Frightened! CCP Arrests Another Journalist After Live Streaming What Life Was Like in Wuhan

Republican lawmakers have invoked the Global Magnitsky Act to call for sanctions against top Chinese officials on their handling of the new coronavirus. The letter was sent by Jim Banks, Dan Crenshaw, and Lance Gooden to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. It calls out the officials not just for their handling of the virus, but also for human rights abuses of Chinese ethnic minorities.

They state, “We write to you today regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s duplicitous, ineffective, and cruel response to the outbreak of COVID-19. We believe their actions violated the 2005 International Health Regulations, the human rights of their citizens, and basic principles of fairness and responsibility in international relations.”

And Chinese authorities have continued their coverup of the virus by arresting a fourth known citizen journalist amid the virus outbreak. The individual was allegedly detained after live streaming videos showing the situation in Wuhan during the height of the lockdown.

These stories and more in this episode of Crossroads.
